Behind the Buzz

A big part of WINGS' motivations lies in helping the bees, to try and repay all that they do for us. Simply put, we would have a much harder time getting by without them. They keep our ecosystem thriving, and keep our crops flourishing. Bees mean a greener earth, and mean food on the table. They're responsible for pollinating more than $15 billion of crops in the United States every year. It's with their help that we get fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts. The food you eat on a day to day basis exists because of their help with pollination.

Not only do they keep our ecosystem alive, and help us to maintain a healthy and happy environment, but they play a big part in the economy. If farmers are unable to grow their crops, they're not able to maintain the same output. There's a huge production decrease if they're unable to grow things, which means a big hit to the economy, in addition to the hit it takes on the food we have access to.

There are a lot of things affecting the bees and putting their lives in danger, and through them, putting us at risk as well. Global warming, for one, that big industries continue to contribute to through practices that cause harm to the environment. Bees are also hurt by things like the use of certain pesticides farmers use on their crops to protect them from other, harmful pests. Some pesticides banned in other countries are still allowed in the United States. It's clear there's a risk involved with using them, but many farmers ignore that.

It's important the bees stay alive and healthy so that the rest of the world can, too. Harmful practices have a massive ripple effect, and if we can't save bees' lives, we can't save our own, either.
